Carson designs lingerie for Coquette International, based in Cambridge, Ont., headquarters for a job that has her styling photo shoots and travelling to Paris, China and Los Angeles to source new fabrics and inspiration. Star AnnaLynne McCord wore one of Carson's corsets on the red carpet in March. Here, Carson speaks about corsets and confidence.

Q: Do you think women want a similar reaction in the privacy of their own home?

A: I don't know if women want to be hounded by the paparazzi and posted in tabloid magazines, but women wear lingerie to get noticed in the bedroom, not only because they look sexy, but they feel great about themselves.

Q: Lingerie has been around since the pre-Christian era with the first recorded corset created by the women of Crete, they stood proudly bare-breasted with their corsets tightly confining their waist and hips. Now in 2010, what is the message behind your designs?

A: What's great about being a woman today is that we can decide what's sexy and have so much to choose from. No matter your personal taste, each woman can decide what message she wants to send, from a cutesy baby doll to a sultry red satin corset. There's a freedom that women have to look one way today and then do something entirely different tomorrow. The overall message behind Coquette and my designs is that women are empowered to choose what they find sexy and to look as sexy as they feel.

Q: Do women, deep down, want to look like Victoria's Secret models winging down the runway in revealing fashions?

A: When I see the Victoria's Secret models, it's not like I want to be them, but the way they walk down the runway with such confidence is what I admire. It just goes to show how sexy lingerie can encourage that much confidence. Women wear lingerie for many different reasons, and it's ok to wear it in the privacy of your own home just as much as it's ok to flaunt it at a club.

Q: What did you think about the controversy surrounding the photo shoot of the scantily clad Miss U.S.A. hopefuls?

A: We need to see more of this — the photography was amazing! I think it's great that the Miss USA pageant is going in a new direction by taking a modern perspective with its contestants. Lingerie shouldn't be controversial, women have come such a long way over the years and we should be proud to show our true selves if it makes us feel good. There's nothing wrong with beautiful and talented women showing off their sexuality – what's there to hide from?

Q: Is your partner happy with your career choice?

A: My boyfriend and friends are very supportive of what I do. When he sees videos of the Coquette fashion shows or flips through the catalogues, I can tell that he is extremely proud of what I do and what I can accomplish. The look of awe on his face when he sees me wearing something I designed pushes me to create more and take my designs to a new level. I'm sure the fact that I design lingerie is a nice bonus for him. But the lingerie in my closet isn't just for me; my boyfriend also doubles as my own personal model for Coquette's ZAKK collection which is our intimate apparel line for men. He's happy with what I do, but he also has to work for it!
